Choosing the Right Safety Sign Materials for your Workplace

How to make sure your signs stay visible, durable and cost‑effective

Safety signs do a simple but essential job: they help people find their way, stay informed and avoid hazards. But even the clearest design won’t perform well if the material behind it isn’t suited to the environment. A sign in a warm college corridor faces very different challenges to one on a construction perimeter fence in winter. Choosing the right material is about more than legislation or compliance; it’s also about practicality, longevity and value for money.

This guide breaks down the most common safety sign materials used across construction, agriculture, manufacturing, retail and education, helping you match each one to the conditions it will face.

Foamex: Lightweight and Ideal for Indoors

Foamex is a popular choice for both indoor and outdoor environments where signs need to be clear, tidy and cost‑effective. It’s lightweight, easy to mount and offers excellent print quality. For factories labelling plant rooms, workshops or service corridors, or for retailers stocking multipacks of everyday signs, Foamex is a reliable option.

Foamex fares surprisingly well outdoors and has good durability in sunny or rainy conditions, however, for use in positions that are exposed to wind regularly, a more rigid material such as aluminium composite may be a better choice.

Correx: The Go‑To for Temporary and Perimeter Signage

Correx (fluted polypropylene) is a lightweight, budget‑friendly material that’s ideal for temporary signage. It’s widely used on construction sites, at one‑day events, and anywhere signs need to be installed quickly and removed just as easily.

Because it’s rigid yet light, Correx is perfect for construction perimeter fencing. It’s easy to drill or punch holes for cable‑ties, making installation fast on mesh panels or temporary barriers. It’s also the material behind our folding site safety boards, where portability and practicality matter more than long‑term durability.

Correx won’t last as long as Dibond outdoors, but for short‑term or fast‑changing environments, it’s a cost‑effective choice.

Dibond / Aluminium Composite: Built for Long‑Term Outdoor Use

Dibond is the heavy‑duty option for permanent or long‑term outdoor signage. Made from aluminium composite, it’s rigid and weatherproof, making it ideal for farms, estates, manufacturing yards and fixed construction signage.

It withstands knocks, machinery, livestock and rough handling far better than lighter materials. The upfront cost is a little higher, but the lifespan can be significantly longer, making it a smart investment for fixed locations.

Self‑Adhesive Vinyl: Flexible and Perfect for Equipment

Vinyl stickers are a good option for windows, doors and smooth indoor surfaces. They’re flexible, easy to apply and cost‑effective for high‑volume use. Vinyl can be laminated for extra durability for both indoor and outdoor use.

The key limitation is surface quality. Vinyl needs a clean, smooth base to adhere properly, so it’s not suitable for rough timber, stone or dusty environments.

Magnetic Signs: Temporary, Reusable and Practical

Magnetic signs are ideal for temporary or seasonal needs. Contractors moving between sites, agricultural vehicles during harvest, or visitor attractions with changing routes can all benefit from signage that can be removed and reapplied without damage.

Magnetic is a great choice for vehicle branding where the vehicle frequently switches between business and personal use - you can just whip them off, and pop them back on again when needed.

They work best on flat metal surfaces and need occasional cleaning to prevent dirt from affecting adhesion, but they offer unmatched flexibility.

Matching the Material to the Environment

Wet, muddy, outdoor farm areas
Dibond or Foamax Withstands weather, livestock and machinery
Indoor retail, education or manufacturing Foamex Lightweight, cost-effective, clean finish
Temporary construction sites Correx Lightweight, low-cost, easy to cable tie
Machinery and vehicles Vinyl or magntic Flexible, durable, removable
Long-term outdoor signage (windy conditions) Dibond High durability and long lifespan

When It’s Worth Upgrading

Not every sign needs to be heavy‑duty. Indoor notices, staff‑only areas and low‑traffic corridors are perfectly suited to Foamex. Temporary fencing, short‑term works and event signage are ideal for Correx. But for outdoor sites, exposed entrances or areas with machinery or livestock, investing in Dibond pays off quickly.
