Eighty years of Rugby and Community in Thorne with Thornensians RUFC
Tue 26th May 2026Thornensians RUFC is far more than a rugby club. It is a living, breathing piece of local history, a place where generations have learned the values of teamwork, discipline, resilience, and belonging. As the club approaches an extraordinary milestone of 80 years of competitive rugby in Thorne, its story stands as a powerful example of how sport can shape a community for nearly a century.
From a bold school decision to a lifelong rugby legacy
The origins of Thornensians RUFC can be traced back to an inspired and somewhat revolutionary decision by Mr J.E. Shipley-Turner, the former Headmaster of Thorne Grammar School. With a clear vision to broaden sporting opportunity and instil strong values in his pupils, he replaced association football with rugby union as the school’s primary winter sport. That single decision changed everything.
Rugby quickly took hold, embedding itself into school life and, more importantly, into the hearts of the students. Many continued playing long after leaving education, and from this growing passion, Old Thornensians RUFC was born in 1939.
However, like so many community stories of that era, progress was interrupted by World War II. Competitive rugby didn’t truly begin until the 1946/47 season in a moment that marked the true beginning of the club’s enduring journey. This coming season therefore represents an incredible eight decades of rugby being played in Thorne.
As the club reflects on its foundation, it still proudly acknowledges the man who started it all. Mr Shipley-Turner became the club’s first President, with his influence shaping the ethos that continues today: sportsmanship, inclusivity, and community spirit.
“His early leadership and dedication helped cement the values that still underpin the club today.” - Daniel Duckitt, Club Secretary
A true community “forever home”
In 1985, the club made a landmark decision to purchase its “forever home” at Church Balk/Coulman Road. What followed was not a quick construction project, but a labour of love.
Over several years, players, volunteers, tradespeople and supporters came together to build the clubhouse, driven by pride and commitment rather than profit. The result is a space that comfortably seats around 200 people indoors across two rooms, with a terrace that regularly welcomes over 150 supporters on matchdays.
At its peak, the ground has seen crowds of over 1,000 during historic Yorkshire Cup fixtures in the 1970s in a reminder of just how deeply rooted rugby is in the area.
Today, the clubhouse remains one of the club’s greatest assets. Warm, welcoming, and proudly unpretentious, it is not just a rugby venue but a true community hub. Weddings, funerals, birthdays, meetings and celebrations all take place under its roof. It is a space where life happens in all its forms.
A hub for far more than rugby
While rugby sits at the heart of Thornensians RUFC, the club’s influence stretches far beyond the pitch. Throughout the year, the facilities are used for an impressive range of community activities, including:

One particularly important partnership sees Thorne And Moorends Community Food Bank using the clubhouse weekly, providing a vital lifeline for families in need.
The club also regularly hosts major social events and entertainment evenings, from tribute acts and comedy nights to black tie balls, psychic evenings, bonfire celebrations and family-friendly New Year’s Eve events. It is, quite simply, a year-round focal point for the town.

Sponsors – the lifeblood behind the scenes
Like many volunteer-led clubs, Thornensians RUFC relies heavily on sponsorship to keep its doors open and its ambitions alive. But this is not just financial support, it is a partnership that directly benefits the entire community.
Every pound of sponsorship goes straight back into the club, helping to:
-
Reduce player and parent subscription fees
-
Provide essential kit and equipment
-
Maintain and improve facilities
-
Support youth development programmes
Pitch-side hoardings, in particular, play a vital role. With hundreds of spectators attending weekly matches, they provide excellent visibility for local businesses while reinforcing the strong link between club and community.
“Sponsorship is massive for our volunteer-led club. Everything we receive goes straight back into the running of the club and helps reduce costs for players and families.” - Daniel Duckitt
Without sponsors, many of the club’s programmes simply would not be possible. It is a true example of local business and grassroots sport working hand in hand.
Working with Parrot Signs
When it came to upgrading pitch-side hoardings and club signage, Thornensians RUFC chose to work with us following a recommendation, and the partnership has gone from strength to strength.
With limited in-house design expertise, the club needed a partner who could take ideas from concept to completion. That’s where we stepped in.
“We just have visions that we put down on paper, and Parrot Signs bring them to life. The prices are always very reasonable, and they offer us the one-stop shop we need from design to print to delivery.” - Daniel Duckitt
From initial design support through to production, the aim has been to make the process as simple and stress-free as possible allowing volunteers to focus on what they do best: running the club.
Looking to the future
Despite its proud history, Thornensians RUFC is not standing still. The club has ambitious plans to continue growing its player base, develop its rebranding, and invest in more sustainable operations.
A key focus is reducing its carbon footprint through renewable energy solutions, ensuring the club remains not only a cornerstone of the community today, but a responsible and forward-thinking hub for future generations.
From its schoolyard origins to its status as a thriving community institution, Thornensians RUFC stands as a powerful reminder of what grassroots sport can achieve. It is a place built on volunteers, sustained by sponsors, and driven by passion, and its story is still being written, one season at a time.
